Having recently experienced the power of silence in a monastery with a focus on God (searching and getting to know Him better)
I came across in contact with monastery lifestyle and some traditions we can learn from. Stillness is one of the key elements (they take this pretty far). A more applicable rule of thumb I recently came across is the following, by dom André Louf (parafrased to english): “everyone can, if he wants, follow the following simple rule:
- every day take care to have a short time of silence and to be alone;
- every week half a day
- every month a day
- every year a week
The rendez-vous with solitude must be planned carefully, make a clear notation in your agenda and make an effort to stick to it.
All that commit to this simpel lifestyle rule, shall gradually discover it is extraordinary fruitfull.”
It is basically making sure you structure in time to be ‘alone’ with God. (Expect nothing, do not read, do not listen to anything, no phone, just be you in the presence of Him). If you feel it is hard or you are to busy, build it up; start with 2 minutes, then 3, 4,5,10,20, 30. And of course gently shut up that carnal mind. That is for the silence part.
The longer days can be spent doing things you like but that bring you closer to Him (more like mindfull/meditative activities such as writting, reading the bible, making music, singing psalms, walking in nature, whatever suits you not for the trill or performance but honouring and spending time with the Creator)
Great episode again! Thanks 🙏

Thank you for this! I will be implementing this in my life and this is exactly what I needed to help me get started!
